CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

On my way back to the boat, I stopped at the post office to pick up my mail. The last thing I wanted to see when I pulled my mail out of the PO Box was a notification to pick up a certified letter. I had not one, but two notifications.

My gut told me they weren’t good news. Nothing good had ever come in a certified letter addressed to me. I took the notification slips to the pickup counter, and the clerk handed me two certified letters. I didn’t have a clue as to what they were about.

Both letters were from law firms, one I recognized, the other I didn’t. I could see it had become a let’s go home and get drunk kind of day.

My next stop was the liquor store at the harbor. I picked up a fresh bottle of tequila to numb the impending doom the letters most likely contained. Between the letters and the stolen video, it definitely looked like the trifecta of a rotten day. I’d had just about all I could stand, and it wasn’t even noon yet.

When I got back to the Holo-Holo, Pierre was lying in the shade under the fighting chair. I had to dodge little piles of puke where he’d upchucked his dog bones. He did his best to eat them all in one sitting. The evidence was clear he wasn’t a self-feeder, and I knew little about dogs.

After I’d cleaned up the mess, I went into the salon and sat the bottle of tequila and letters on the table next to the galley. I grabbed a letter opener and a shot glass, then took a seat.

If I’d taken a couple of shots first, there was an excellent chance I wouldn’t have read the letters. So I compromised and took a shot, then opened each letter.

It had been weeks since the last time I had a drink. I didn’t particularly care for the taste of alcohol; it was the warmth in my belly and the eight seconds of ecstasy when it hit my brain that kept me coming back for more.

I opened the letter from the law firm I recognized first. It was from an ambulance chaser in Honolulu. Aldrich Cook was demanding payment for his medical costs related to the bullet I’d put in his shoulder. He also wanted fifty thousand dollars for pain and suffering. Yeah, people in hell want ice water. The balls on that guy was the first thought that came to mind. I took another shot of tequila as I regretted missing his heart. I was really beginning to regret not capping him when I had him face down in the sand the night he attacked me.

I promised myself I’d get back to a monthly trip to the gun range after I moved to Las Vegas. In my defense, the only range on the island was in Hilo, a hundred miles away on the other side of the island.

Since I’d retired, I hadn’t wanted to make the two hundred mile round trip since I didn’t need to re-qualify for the job anymore.
